1. Is this a free clinic?
Answer: San Diego Family Care clinics are not generally free. They are nonprofit community clinics. Each clinic site accepts Medi-Cal, Medi-Cal Managed Care, Medicare, Medicare/Medi-Cal, Healthy Families, Tricare/Champus (Standard), and Private Insurance. We offer a sliding fee scale to cash patients based upon income and family size.
2. What free services do the clinics have?
Answer: The clinics offer several different State funded programs that offer free care, if you are eligible. Eligibility is based on income and family size. The programs include: Child Health and Disability Program (Well Child Care), Family Pact (Family Planning Services), and the Cancer Detection Program. Mental health services may be offered at no cost, based on eligibility. Screening for eligibility for County programs is available. Call clinic for more details.
3. Do I need an appointment?
Answer: The clinics ask that you make an appointment, but walk-in patients are always welcome.
4. Do you accept checks?
Answer: No. We are unable to provide this service.
5. Do you accept credit cards?
Answer: No, credit cards are not accepted.
6. Is San Diego Family Care a HIPAA compliant corporation?
Answer: San Diego Family Care is HIPAA compliant. We respect every patient's right to total privacy and confidentiality at all times. Our Privacy Notice is posted at each clinic site.
7. Do you have translators for non-English speaking patients?
Answer: Yes! We provide translation in Spanish, Lao, Hmong, Vietnamese, French, and various other languages. Please make your language needs known and we will be able to accommodate you.
8. Do you have dental, x-ray, and optometry services?
Answer: We do not provide these services ourselves, but we do have dental services available by referral and there are on-site dental services offered for adults and children at our 4305 University Avenue, Suite 150 site. Radiology services are also available at this site. Optometry services are referred. Uninsured patients may be eligible for dental services at a no cost or shared cost basis.
9. Do I have to see a doctor first for a vaccination?
Answer: No, we have an experienced, trained staff that is able to review immunization records and determine what is necessary to bring you up to date on your immunizations. Appointments are available and we have walk-in hours at all sites. Contact the individual site for specific hours.
10. Do I have to see the doctor for a refill on my medicine?
Answer: Usually, it is not necessary. Patients who are actively being seen by a practitioner at any clinic site may phone in to get a refill on prescriptions ordered by a San Diego Family Care practitioner. Your request will be evaluated by a medical professional.
11. Do you have any teen services?
Answer: Yes, we have a Teen Program devoted to meeting the health needs of teens. Our Teen Program is staffed with people trained specifically to work with teens and we have special programs that may be free of charge to those qualified. Click here to go to the Teen Scene page.
12. How will I know my test results?
Answer: The practitioners review all reports shortly after their arrival. This would include laboratory, x-ray and consultation reports from other practitioners. If any of the reports have significant findings, the practitioner will contact you. Otherwise, our clients are encouraged to wait until the next visit with the practitioner to confirm that the report showed nothing significant.
13. When am I due for my next visit?
Answer: We send out postcards to alert you to your next visit.
